I found this bronco I am thinking about buying and the guy said it has a 351 but I dont know if it would be a 351m or 351w does anyone know maybe what a 78 bronco came out with the truck appeared really stock and clean
351M and 400's were the most popular engines in the bronco's. Unless a swap was done it's definately a 351M. A swap would be very costly and involve a lot of work. you could tell by looking at the frame near the mounts and see if they were changed but i really doubt it.... The Windsor never came factory in Trucks.
cool cause a got a good 400 if it is a 351 that guy only wants 800 and there is practically nothing wrong with it the paint is good intieror isnt bad and it runs good he just rebuilt the frontend and put new shocks all the way around it.
351-400Ms were the only optional engines, and they look so alike it could be a 400, but if the engines never been out of it, go by the stickers or vin.
Ford started fasing in the 351w in about 82-83, they used the 351M stock up before using the windsor.
For 800 bucks, I say jump on it.
That is an easy swap from the 351M to a 400M
yeah I got a 750 edlebrock I know is too big but thats what I got I figured the 400 with a good cam and that carb should do pretty good in that bronco then looks like Summitracing carrys some cheap headers for under 100 bucks and throw some 2 1/2 duals with glass packs and it would make a great trail rig what you guys think it got stock size tire looks like but it has the old style slotted mags looks okay.
It probably is a 351 or 400 M. Someone said the windsor never came factory in the broncos. The windsor did come factory in trucks. Thats what all the 80-96 trucks had. I could be wrong on the exact years, but I know our 85 has a 351 windsor. My 95 has a 302 which is a windsor motor. I am not sure what year it changed.
The 351w was not an option in 78-79 broncos or trucks, but they replaced the M blocks in 1980-83.
Also, it's a common mistake that the 302 is a windsor block, but is not.
The 351w got it's name because of the foundery it was cast in and to also, to distinguish it from the other 2 351 blocks
