nope. I wouldn't slap a turbo on a motor without making sure the internals were built anyways. There are a lot of turbo kits on ebay that are generic and will probably not do much for you.

Do you have a picture or info on the turbo kit?

Also as a fellow 78 owner, i wouldn't slap a turbo on it anyways. It has plenty of power on it's own unless you plan to race it. Another bad idea. They have the power to move you up a muddy hill you just need the right tires for the job. A turbo i doubt would help much. And no thy wouldn't match up. The 351/400 M blocks were different from Windsor blocks.

I believe that the 351C may work on a 351M with a bit of work if they have one.

I will be completely building a 400 eventually and am interested in putting a turbo on it. Ive read a lot about why this is a bad idea but have seen almost all of it is just "bad idea" or "just put in a 460 instead" I want to know WHY it isn't a good idea and am not interested in swapping to a different engine.

The 400 is actually a good motor to boost, it has low compression and reasonably large internal components.
I think the problems start when you throw too much boost at an old tired engine with crappy timing and low oil pressure.
You first have to address the timing issue, this is easy enough with a new straight up timing set. The oil pressure is another issue all together, this requires a full rebuild.
I plan to boost my Bronco and I am building the engine with that goal in mind. I will be running 5 to 6 psi tops, any more than that would require forged rods and pistons.

So since I do plan on a rebuild anyway I don't see any reason not too. So are you planning on boosting your/wife's 79? how's that going btw? haven't seen any progress lately.

I'd recommend reading up on the 351M cooling issues. The back 2 cylinders don't get very cool cooling due to the dry intake. I forget the name but there is a thermostat that is specifically made to help that issue. Mine is old and tired so I'm not overly concerned, and it doesn't get warm anymore, it sits. But anyway, if you're going to boost it I'm sure you'll be running it hard, don't want that purty engine to get hurt.
