E4OD backward compatibility

I have a 1991 5.8L F150 Lariat XLT Super Cab Long Bed with overdrive AT - E4OD. I've heard newer years have major strength/durability upgrades compared to this one. If my transmission has major problems, which years are a direct retrofit (compatible with my ECU, cables, etc)?

Thanks!

Steven

I've heard that the E4OD had some major upgrades starting in '95 (made me happy because I heard that after I bought my '95 F250) but I thought that they still used the AOD in the F150's in '91. If it doesn't have the O/D Off button on the shift lever than it's not an E4OD.

At any rate, I would bet that it would be cheaper and much less of a headache for you to take your tranny to a reputable shop and have it rebuilt with any upgrades to strengthen it instead of trying to fit another tranny from a different year truck. That way you would have the strength you want and you know it will fit and work properly.

His 91 has an E4OD. An AOD was never offered behind a 351. Too much torque in its stock form.

But, as Brian said, a rebuilt unit is the best way to go. A used trans is not the way to go, as you don't know the history. 20k miles and you could be looking at a new tranny again. If you need to do it anyway, any E4OD from behind a 300, 302, or 351 will fit your truck.
