Old Guys are Obsolete.

In the “Where’s Fenders” thread there was talk about the Forum slowing down and the “Older Guys” not being around, or not having as much to say.
From my own perspective, which can be thought of any way you like, us “Older Guys” have taught the newcomers so well that we no longer have to answer the routine questions. I check this forum at least 4 times a day, and often 7/8 times. I see a question that catches my attention and low and behold someone and usually more that 1 has answered almost exactly as I would have (including the S/A remarks).
Now I mainly look for threads that I can contribute my experience to, as in: this is the way the book says, now here is an easier way, or to make a S/A remark.

I will ALWAYS chime in on matters of safety or threats to the Forum.

This place is another Home for me and you guys are like my In-Laws.

Dick

summer weather is here, and the frame is now in the garage. I'm currently filing my list of Questions. I hope you "older-guys" are willing to answer, S/A remarks and all. I, too, gaze thru the forums 7,8 or more times a day(evening). It's much better than TV reruns.

Dick, I hope you like your in-laws. Otherwise, I'll chalk this up as one of your S/A remarks.

Seriously, though, I consider myself one of the younger guys around here, both in age and experience. If not for the "older guys" this forum would be (IMHO) a waste of time. I think about the millions of hours of tinkering that the collective group has amassed over our lifetimes and clearly the "youth challenged" among us have more to contribute as a result.

I haven't read through the "where's 'Fenders?" thread, but if people are complaining that the forum has slowed down, perhaps they should learn to use the search function. I'm sure the answer is in here somewhere.

Here's a big, giant "thank you" (with a raised beer bottle) to all you "older guys" that spend your time on this forum keeping the rest of us from destroying our trucks.

So, what is the definition of "old guy"?

I think we need a man rule here!

Is an old guy over 50 or over 60?

Frankly, I think age is a state of mind. I'm over 50 and perfectly happy to give my opinion to anyone who will listen and those that won't. I'm also man enough to tell you I don't know the answer.

Gotta be over 60, cause 50 seems to be getting closer year after year, and I'm not old.

As a novice I appreciate the input from the "seasoned" members because their experience has stood the test of time. Don't let the "young turks" discourage your input. The alternative is to let them struggle and find out the hard way that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but shows maturity.

There are "Old Guys" on this Forum that are still in their Teens or barely out of them. They have been here for years, asked the questions, took on the task, made the mistakes, and made the contributions, just as we all do.
These Young Guys or newer members of the forum are now shareing their knowledge and the lessions that they have learned even with an Old Guy like me.

I started working on this same year class of trucks as a teen, doing the same things as we do now. I learned from my Father, neighbors and friends and books, only thing different was they were all working trucks then, and one heck of a lot newer, and no one had any idea what a computer was or the benifits that it has brought to what now is a hobby.

I go by the statement that age is the "State of the behind"

I have an ever growing "Tech File" of all the new things that I learn here and other places. There is always someone that has more knowledge than I do about any given subject.

I also am a firm believer in leading a person to the trough of knowledge and having them teach themselves to drink.

One thing I have noticed about these types of forums, especially for us "older types" Its seasonal...

In the Northern states Winter is more of a time to do inside things (garage?) In the spring there are many things to do to the house, yard, and garden.. The older/more setteled down one is, the more these become a reality every spring. Also a great time to throw open the big garage door and work on the truck as well, but lawns/gardens/home repair...it all has to be done once in a while!

Sooo,,,,, Whats a "S/A remark" ???

I have been on this board since it started with emailed letters. I used to answer a lot of questions posted on the board, but members seemed to have evolved. I am a stocker, a person who prefers stock or close to stock 1948-52 Bonus Built trucks. Most of the people seem to have moved into '53 and later modified trucks which I really don't have any knowledge of. Like Dick, I check in at least once a day, usually more, and drop in my two cents when I think appropriate. Must of the questions I have answered have been posted numerous times and I figure that what I have to offer has been dealt with. I just sit back and read now.

Like everything else in life, the board changes and grows. We just have to adjust.

Im glad to see that Im not the only one always checking the forum. It's the first thing I look at in the morning and the last thing I see before bed and sometimes several times in between. Im always in awe of some of the knowledge some of the guys have. The younger guys often have younger guy questions just like I did some years ago, but then there was no internet to hook us all up and we had to learn by experience(expensive). I really cant pinpoint what it is I love so much about this forum or is it just the love of trucks or people?

IMNSHO, ''old guys'' refers to how long you've been doing ''this stuff'' I have been doing this since I worked in my dad's shop at 12, I'm 59.5 now so I guess I qualify on both ends.
