Great post. Thanks to all the "old guys" without them/us would we be having this conversation. Rememer, experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.
I've only been a member of FTE for a couple of years and had my 56 for 3.5 years. Except for some fabrication and mechanic work on SCCA sports cars in the early 70's, I have done very little auto mechanic or custom work. So, by way of experience, I am a noobie.
I have wanted a hot rod since I was old enough to build plastic models of them and since I am now nearing retirement, I would certainly qualify as an old guy.
Early on, I had tons of questions, all of which had been asked countless times by others previously. But I never experienced any put-downs for not knowing or asking what I considered to be a silly question.
I check in on this forum every morning, stay on all day, and answer threads that I think I can be of useful help (or if a S/A remark comes to mind). It is tons of fun and I learn something every day.
I have met a few of the members in person, but feel I also know many others very well from many dialogues. This forum is a lot like an extended family. Always helpful, often funny and always inspiring and/or compassionate for life's let-downs.
FF56 I have about .5 more years (age) experience than you, but now this discussion is starting to make me feel old! I haven't traded the hotrods for a rocker just yet tho, and don't really plan to ever do so. My personal philosophy is you are only as old as you let yourself be, and I stopped letting myself get older at around 35.
I like to pass on my hard gained experience to others so they don't have to go thru the school of hard knocks like I did. Everything we did had to be self taught, self engineered and self invented. Had there been a way to communicate like the internet when I started out I can only guess where I'd be now, and had the technology and aftermarket support been there at that time who knows what hotrods would look like now. I'm still learning everyday but it's a lot easier to do so now.
To me this place is a club of friends with a common interest, I believe we'd be hanging out at each other garages if we all lived in the same town.
well ive only been here for maybe 6 months or so, im only halfway through my first biuld(1959 f100 4x4), and im only 15 so im a youngun all the way around and i really apreciate the input i get from all the poeple on this board who know more than me. this board gives me alot of isperation and ideals for future projects. and lastly i think age should be measured in the number of builds you have complete of number of years you have been working on cars. just my two cent or maybe five
I'm just a puppy (ok, ok, so I stretch the truth a bit....I'm 41) and I'm no strangers to cars. I started out wrenching as a young'un, first on bicycles and then on mini-bikes, go-karts, and motorcycles before buying my first car at 14 or so. I've always loved cars, trucks, customs, rods, etc and when my friends used to swap trading cars of their favorite sports heros I had a stack of trading cars with the latest street rods, customs, dragsters, etc (I sure wish I had those cards now).
I found this board about a year or so ago, I was welcomed with open arms into this family and have learned (and continue to learn) new information, techniques, data, tips, shortcuts, how-to's etc every time I log on.
The old guys are definately NOT obsolete!!!!! You guys are a wealth of information, wit, humor, and S/A remarks (I appreciate them all) and a big reason why I like to spend some time here on a daily basis. Keep up the good work!!!
Ya, I'm here at least 7/8 times a day... Every time I ask a question here you guys provide me with a wealth of information, often multiple ways of repairing or modifying something... I so very much appreciate the help, the support, and even the S/A remarks! I have been very stressed about a repair or problem and when I am, I know I can come here, ask questions, and feel better about the whole thing...
Ah Jeese, I was looking to rile things up a little and here you Guys have turned this into a mutual/group/weepyeyed/pat-every-body-on-the-back hug thing.
I don't want to hug you, I want to talk about trucks, spit, fart, get greasy and bust some knuckles.
Don't ask me no questions about ELECTRONICS (Opened the Hood on my Explorer, took me 10 minutes to find the distributor - It was square - I shut the Hood).
Don't ask me no questions here about chevys, this is a Ford Site.
Don't ask me no questions that ya can't stand the answers to.
Man, I love this site, I can act grumpy, shut down the puter, leave.
....I think its time you shut down the 'puter take some of them meds (is it the red ones on Fridays?? or the yellows?) amble out to the shop, crack open a frosty beverage and proceed to stare at the inside of your eyelids while making old fart snoring sounds as the drool rolls down your chin.
