I just recently got a 96 7.3L Direct Injected Turbo Diesel. I'm new to the diesel trucks and no little about them. I was wondering if this is concidered a powerstroke or not? Also, I towed a load from Chandler, AZ to Clovis, NM (About 5500LBS) and only got about 9 MPG. Can someone help me with this? Is this decent mileage or is there something wrong with my truck?
Yes you have a powerstroke. The mileage seems a little low, depending on how you drove it. First I would check/change all the basics. Air and fuel filter. How olds the oil. These trucks are pretty sensitive on the oil type and condition. Old broken down oil will really hurt the performance of the powerstroke.
First that sounds a little low. You should go into your user cp and put some info about your truck in your signature so we can more understand the gearing and size of your truck .

I have a 1996 F-250 Single cab w/auto trans. Pretty sure it has 377 rear gear and it's 2 wheel drive. Also, I forgot to mention that the truck topped out at 35MPH going up hills.
That's the funny part, there was a little black smoke, but that was it. I was told that these trucks smoke like a ciggarette when they are pulling up hills? I was also just reading that site you suggested, however, It's not telling me anything about the turbo or pulling power. Can anyone tell me where to start with this truck. Let me know what information is needed.
Stock, these trucks smoke very little. Have you changed the fuel filter, checked the air filter, changed the oil??? Does it run smooth? How many miles??? The turbo on these truck are very durable and rarley cause any trouble. Were blind to whats going on with your truck so ya got to give some detail.....
PULLING A 6500 LB TRAILOR WITH MY 2WD 5SD. I GOT AROUND 14MPG. WHICH IS PRETTY GOOD. I DON'T OWN IT ANYMORE, AND IT WAS ONE OF THE FEW LIGHT DUTY 7.3 DIESELS MADE IN 96. SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE SOME SERIOUS MAINTENANCE ISSUES THAT HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED. JCAB

I'd agree with jcab! I've got a 96 CC with the 7.3 Powerstroke turbo diesel. It has around 179k miles. It does smoke on start up but not much after. It leaks oil like a sive but PLENTY of towing power. It's why I bought it. I tow a 9500 Lb fifth wheel up and down some pretty steep hills and on the road and as long as I'm moving, I have no problem maintaining 50 mph going up the hills. Starting from a stop at the bottom? Well it'll accellerate but it'd take me 25 minutes to get up to 55. My trucks a little beat up but it's still a pretty nice tower. I'm also getting about 12 - 13 mpg on the highway towing the load.
You might be getting better fuel mileage, but you might be losing it in oil loss. What is causing the oil leak, rear main seal? jcab

your truck should pull like a freight train up hills. there is something going on. when you change your fuel filter see if it is black. hows the air filter? how does your truck run above 2000 rpms? do you have any gauges?
