anyone recently gotten new up pipes? My mileage is down and has been for a while now. I've got 180,000 miles and still have stock up pipes. recently did a 3" downpipe, a 6637 filter and a dom66 turbo and didn't know about the leaky up pipes at the time. Just curious if anyone has experience or opinions. I know I need to replace the HPOP and injectors to get the benefits of the new turbo. I'm saving up and trying to decide what to buy first, but leaning toward up pipes and gauges
BTW where you at in Phoenix? I lived out there about 12 yrs ago for a while. Right off I10 and Estrella Parkway in Goodyear. I miss the west and the clean rigs!
Thanks for the link, I've never welded but my neighbor is pretty good. I'm right in the middle of Phoenix, near 24th and Camelback. The trucks out here are definately clean. My buddies in Illinois can't believe how clean mine is for being a '96 when I take it back there. How can I tell if mine(Pipes) are leaking? is it obvious? it runs pretty dang good, but the mileage pretty much sucks, like 9 or 10 with a camper on, no trailer.
Black soot on the pipes right where they go into the collector on the back of the turbo is evidence of them leaking. You may have to look from underneath the truck with a flashlight and crawl up on the engine and look down from above too. Sometimes it's kinda hard to see.
thanks Bill, I looked, not much at all, I ran my finger around them both, barely anything except some oil around the drivers side one, but I think that's from the valve cover. I'll clean it up and check it again.
If you're getting that bad of mileage something's up. Even with stock air box and exhaust mine would knock down 14. Some TLC and a few mods and I'm getting 16-17.
yeah, I need to figure this out, it got 17-18, empty, when I got it. I was hoping it was the uppies. the injectors are stock, maybe it's time to bite the bullet on them. the mileage seemed to go down after running a fuel additive years ago, supposed to clean the injectors, maybe it clogged em.

Start with the easy stuff, fuel filter etc. Unplug the MAP sensor and see if the truck runs any better. This will throw a CEL but that will go away once plugged back in. Check the hose running to the MAP as well, making sure its not plugged or dry rotted. Make sure brakes aren't dragging. And as always these trucks require good clean diesel motor oil. Mine loves the t6 full syn rotella. If you do a search, lots of great threads on mpg improvements.

I have read that also the gasket between the up-pipes/colector and turbo can leak and you dont see any soot. my 0.02
empty I'm only getting about 11-12, something's wrong. it did cross my mind that the front brakes may be sticking, I'll have to check that a little closer, I know with the wheels off, I can't turn the rotors with my bare hands, but I figured that's because they're big. I'll try it with the wheels on. My camper is a cabover, it's about 2k lbs and it IS a pretty big wind catcher. For Sale 03 Alpenlite cabover! I hven't had a chance to check the map sensor or tube yet.
How can you tell if it is leaking im pretty sure i have a leak there
You have to make a leak tester o buy one from Dieselsite (I think they sell them) and put some like 15-20 psi with a compressor and then see if you lose pressure, put some liquid soap there and see if you have bubbles.
I don't think that will work on the exhaust side will it? You would have to make an adapter for your leak tester out of the flange of an old down pipe so you could clamp it on to the exhaust side of the housing. I'm not sure exactly how you would test for leaks there. Maybe someone else has a better idea.
