1984 460 E350 fuel problems

I'm having a serious problem trying to figure out the fuel problem on my motorhome. The guy I bought it from put a new fuel pump on it (from napa) he wired it up direct because the home had bad wires which he didn't realize at the time nor myself when I bought it.I am assuming it is the correct part?I have since repaired the wires(from a schematic from the Chiltons repair manual) and it now runs through the sytem.I have replaced the fuel pump relay(new aftermarket) changed the carb, rebuilt the old carb and bought a new fuel separator(from ford) and the carb still runs out of gas when running the fuel pump through the relay, when I run it direct it pumps to much gas to the carb and floods it out.Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi,
I am new to the list and read your question first.
Can you tell me a little about this fuel system you have?
When did they start using the fuel separator as I have never heard of one?
What fuel pressure does the fuel pump put out and is it in the tank or on the frame?
Where is this fuel separator located?
Is it part of the the selector valve?

Answering all of these questions would be a big help to me and then I might be able to answer yours.

Thanks

The part is called a fuel separator,it is not a fuel water separator that you would find on a diesel. On my 460 and a friends '86 460, E350's.It is maybe a foot in front of the carb and is a tee, many people think it's a fuel filter. The way it actually works is the fuel comes in from the (electric) tank fuel pump and the tee separates it to the carb(also reduces fuel pressure to the carb) and what the carb doesn't use goes out the tee back to the fuel tank.Ford has three different sizes. They measure the hole size(0.40,0.60 and 0.90)to the return line to the tank,if your part is in good shape the part is color coded. one foot note Ford doesn't offer the part anymore so you may have to shop around through different dealers to find one.Although I did get one from Ford.I'm not exactly sure what the pressure is out of the tank but it will pump a stream like a good ****,before it gets to the separator..
