I am planning an engine/trans build, and would like to use an E40D, on a carbed 351w. Although some of the aftermarket trans controllers are getting to be quite affordable, I was wondering if anyone has tried using the stock 90s truck computer.
It seems like the only input needed is throttle position, engine RPM, MAP, VSS, maybe a couple others, which could all be easily adapted to a carbed motor. Could the temp, o2, etc. sensors be left open, or have a resistor to bypass, and would the stock ECU still shift the trans correctly? I know in doing this, the ECU would be reporting error codes like crazy, and the injector output would be all wrong, but why would that matter if the trans is shifting the way it should.
Has anyone tried it? Am I nuts, or just too thrifty!
