93 f150 XLT two 2wd 5.0 - How does the ECU affect and or control the E4OD transmission? Would the ECU have the entire control for shifting (in or out) of the trans while the trans internals perform the work? What does the ECU not have control of. Also what affect does the engine's associated components have on producing transmission faults/problems Thanks
The Power-train Control Module (PCM) controls the engine and E4OD transmission in this application. The E4OD is 100% electronic controlled. The PCM uses input from various drivetrain (Vehicle Speed Sensor) and engine sensors to determine shift point, firmness, etc.
If an engine or drivetrain related sensor is giving the wrong information the transmission can be damaged, but in most cases the PCM will go into limp mode to protect the transmission.
The E4OD has zero control of itself. The valve-body is a set of solenoids that rely on the PCM to tell them when to energize. The PCM also controls the line pressure in the transmission as well.
