I returned from Iraq in January to find that my 1997 Expedition has been having driver's power window problems. When rolling the Driver's window, and only the driver's window, up, the dash caution warning lights flash (as if the key is being turned off and on). As the lights flicker, the window obviously stops. Rolling down it is fine. It would do this several times, then stop and work fine. When it occured and I was driving the truck, the transmission would shift gears, sometimes to a lower gear, sometimes to a higher gear. If it occured and I was in OD, the OD off light would flash afterwards until the truck was restarted.
I found the battery terminals very corroded. I cleaned, but the problem seemed to remain.
Today, it occured and then the driver's window just stopped working. All other windows work fine, from any switch. I can hear the express down relay working and have also tried a different relay. The 30A fuse/breaker is ok.
I will check the voltages at the switch and relay, but I suspect they will be fine.
I believe the General Electronic Control unit on the windows will be faulty. Does anyone here have any experience with a similar problem?
My driver's window has a mind of it's own as well. Works like 90% of the time I try it. I've been told by the dealer that it's "likely" the GEM module, but no gurantees. And it wasn't covered by my Ford Extended Warranty, which was in effect at the time.
Since I don't really roll my windows down, I just live with it.
Well, I figured it out and resolved the problem tonight. All voltages and grounds were present. The window motor ohmed out ok. Upon inspection of the window mechanism, I discovered the scissors assembly had substantial pressure on it. Somehow the window rolled up too far and the window motor could not overcome the pressure. It took me a while to disconnect the window from the track assembly to relieve the pressue, but when I did, the motor and scissors assembly worked fine. I have reassembled the door and it all works.
Speaking of removing door panels--any tips for a 99? I've seen the diagram on the molded hook, but where's the "screw" part of the "screw and molded hook" description? Thanks in advance.
On my 1997, here is how I got the driver's door panel off.
1. Remove the window control panel. Using a small screw driver, carefully pry up on the panel, there is a PLASTIC tab with metal clip at each end. Remove 3 each connectors (windows and door locks)
2 Remove door handle trim. If you look down into where the window switches go, you can push the tabs on the door handle trim.
3. Remove the light panel on the door. Using a small screw driver, starting at the bottom, pry the lens out.
4. Remove the top interior panel (triangle). This is the inside portion at the mirrors. Starting at the fwd portion, using a small screwdriver, pry at the front, and once the front lifts, pry at the rear. The piece will lift up and back. There are 2 plastic tabs going down into the door panel, and one tab in the metal section that slides sideways or back.
5. remove 3 each screws. One long one behind the light lens, one at top mirror, and one behind arm rest (look straight in where window control panel goes.
6. Lift up on door panel. Panel is resting on plastic hooks. The panel will slide upwards and then out. Remember to disconnect the mirror control and the door panel light (turn 1/4 turn).
