The box on my '72 F100 doesn't line up perfectly with the cab. I tried loosening all the box-to-frame bolts but the box won't move from side to side. It's out by about 1/2" when you sight down the side of the truck. Any ideas?
It could be caused by a bent frame. I've never seen one that was off by that much from the factory. Do you know if the truck was ever wrecked? Have you checked the frame to see if it is square and the rails are parallel?
I had the same problem, Sedric. I thought it was a frame problem, so I had it put on a rack and checked. It was dead-nuts perfect. Mine's out by about the same amount, not really obvious, so I figure if Fomoco could live with I can too. However, I'm a little disappointed that there's no adjustability.
Eric
There is a small bed frame that goes side to side that sits on the frame of the truck. This smaller frame could be bent or cracked. You could try spacers to see if that helps. Maybe the bed itself is bent from carrying loads. Also check the cab mounts. Maybe the bed is OK and the cab is off a little.
No the frame isn't bent...is it possible the cab is out or alignment?. Can the whole cab be shifted around? Maybe I should just leave it alone but I had a 69 a few years ago and really improved the looks of it by adjusting the fenders, hood and doors so the gaps were all even and everything lined up. It's a lot of screwing around but it doesn't cost anything.
Here's something...when I look at the 4 mounts for the cab to the frame there are no nuts on the ends of the bolts for the 2 rear mounts. The front mounts have nuts but not the rear ones. Is this right?
That bolt in the rear screws into the big washer on the bottom, there is no nut on the cack two. I would take it to my neighborhood body shop and ask for a little advise, if you can't find anything.
Good Luck
I have a bed off a '71 on my '72 and it also is about 1/2" narrower than the cab. It's not that noticeable unless you're really looking close, so I have it centered as much as possible.
