Is it possible for my power steering box to go stupid and apply pressure pulling the steering wheel to one side? I know it's not my alignment or my tires because it doesn't always pull, it's not related to sidewinds, and it doesn't always pull to the same side. If you are driving and it pulls, you have to give a good swerve and it stops pulling to the side. Is it possible for a valve or something else inside to get stuck and cause this? What's the best way to fix it? I do have 2 spares laying around...
hi
my ford 78 f150 does this but more violently. i thinks it is the stabalizer bar bushings. there really bad because you can turn the wheel and the body and frame moves side to side before the tires turn!
darnh bolt won't come loose, took it to a shop and they couldn't get it off!
Hmmmm, interesting. I would go over every piece of the steering linkage. Have someone slowly turn the wheel while you look for any play. Check the rag joint. I don't believe the steering box is causing the problem. Be sure the box is not loose on the frame.
just had a van at work doing the same thing. it was the king pins, both sides had a seized bushing. replaced them and it drives like it did 6 months ago.
I have a 73 F100 and it has what is called a Power steering pull.It pulls to the right.I had a new front end put in my truck and thats how I found out about mine. When I start my truck the steering wheel makes about a quarter turn to the right. When I drive down the road it always pulls to the right turn the truck off while I am driving and the pull quits.what you steering wheel when you start it if it turns then you probably have the same problem
If its a 4x4 it is possable that the front axel u joints are super rusty and froze, this causes eratic stearing and hard to find center in the wheel. Just did a 79 4x4 and a 77 4x4 100% improvement. :-)
Thanks for the responses. I will check the entire steering linkage & front suspension this weekend. I am already planning to put the energy suspension bushings in the passenger side (I did the driver side 2 weeks ago). But something is definitely going weird in the steering. Last night it started creaking/groaning/clunking on a low speed turn (either direction), even with the truck in park.
I had that problem with a 78 F150 4x4 last summer, they replaced the axle joints and a couple tie rods, it turned out to be a cracked frame right where the steering box mounted. We repaired it and it drove good, clean that area real well and make sure that's not your problem.
Pod4,,without trying sound sarcastic, but how could the
u-joints cause erratic steering? I'm having the same steering
prob. on my 77 F150 4x4--violent front end wobble.The reason I ask
is it doesn't seem like the u-joints support the tire assembly, rather
just engage front wheels when hubs are locked. Also how much of a bitch is it to change them? thanks
Thanks for all the hints. Turns out the passenger side kingpin won't take any grease, I think it was starting to bind. I pulled the grease nipples out, they're ok, so I sprayed a bunch of penetrating oil inside, will repeat tonight, and then try to grease them again. Truck seems to be steering easier (lighter feeling on the steering wheel), and didn't have the pull yesterday, except for a bit from the sidewind.
