I installed a side mount spare carrier in my truck. I mounted it behind driver side inside the bed. I know below the bed was normal configuration, but my truck did not have one. It was removed some time in its past. The bed mount does have its pluses and minuses, but I prefer it over the one under the bed.
Pic shows it mounted on left side, but they could have been mounted on the right or both sides.
