[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Feb-02 AT 11:50 AM (EST)]Its a 68 f100 2wd with a 360cid....Ok where should i begin... 3 weeks ago i went to get a brake job done at a muffler, brake, and axle/shocks whtaever shop. They put new brake drums and cylinder and brakeline. The brakes have always been fine.
The next day i heard a thumping sound coming from the front drivers side tire.
i took it back and he tightened the lug nuts.
then the next day it happened again. i took it back and he tightened them and said someone was trying to steal my wheels.
then a day later i took it back and he said he was going to replace the studs. and he did (i think)
then it was all good untill about 2 weeks later. The lug nuts started to fall off again!!
Then i said F*&% that im not taking it back to him.
So i took it to this other shop that is really good and ive had a lot of work done there.
Three of the studs were very loose he said when he took the wheel off, he said he was going to weld the studs onto the hub, and he did tell me that if i ever wanted to change the studs i would have to change the hub, i was ok with that. Waiting for about 4 hours he finally finshed at like 8:30
THEN ABOUT 1/4 OF A MILE DOWN THE ROAD THE WHOLE WHEEL FELL OFF!! They towed it back and said i needed a new rim now. and now probably a new hub! AHHHHHHHHHH when is this going to end. The rims are aluminum. There pacers 15' and the model is 286. does anyone have anything to add to this/?????
I have one saying that has alot of meaning to me now...If
you want stuff done right do it yourself...this is because
I busted a coil spring, the mechanic quoated 300-350 dollars
to fix it and get this he was trying to punch holes in the
inner fender(so he could condemn my vehicle,)he was also trying
to bend some other steering stuff in the front(i had to give
him a piece of my mind before anything got hurt)while he made
it look like he was just trying to pry the spring off the bra-
cket..so after geting it outa there i drove it up to school
jacked it up in the lot and what do you know i pulled the job
off in half an hour at the cost of 30 dollars for a used spring.
since the experiance of watching a proffessional mechanic
trying to screw me over I started doing all the work my self
(that was the first and only time ive ever took it to a mechanic)
even if i have to rebuild the entire truck...cause if you
look at it from a mechanics point of view, the more stuff
that needs fixing the better, and what does the average joe
know about this stuff.....
theres lots of totaly awsome rip roaring chevys up where i live....
In the rear view mirror of my ford!!!!!
I've heard of people having trouble sometimes with aluminum rims. If you have a steel spare, run it for awhile and see if the problem goes away. If it does, I would suspect there is something wrong with the rim.
I do most of my work also, but just didnt have the time this time. And the bill he quoted me started at 22$ then shot up to 80$ some how when i payed for it
I think the shop can get deals on rims. Do you think that theres a warrenty on those rims?
\thanks
I think it is the rims. Someone gave me aluminumn rims for my truck and I put them on. Well they worked for a few days and then when I was delivering a snowmobile, wobble wobble drop. The wheel fell off even after tightning them good. Just something to look into.
Well thats the thing, the rim didnt break nor did the lug nuts break. There was just so much wear around where the studs go into the rim that the rim just fell off with the lug nuts on.
I had a mustang with steel wheels with the same problem. I eventually changed the wheel and never had the problem again. I finally bit the bullet after tightening them every day for a month. I drove 60 miles and stopped and only had two lug nuts left. I came damm close to losing the car and figured the cost of a new wheel would be worth a try. It worked.
