Panhard Rod Bolt help!

Hey fellas i need your help to pull through again. i am currently installing the lift for my truck, and i am at the step where i need to remove the panhard rod bolt at the frame. i have the breaker bar to turn the bolt, however i do not have the right size socket. it is smaller than 1 3/16", however it's larger than 1 1/8". i dont want to put the 1 3/16, and round it off and still not have the bolt off. i measured it with calipers, and it came to 1.190". 1.190*25.4=30.2mm. i assume this is a 30mm bolt? i need to go to the store tomorrow and get a 30mm wrench and a socket. if this is not the correct size, please inform me, thanks!

I had the same problem you're having, but I was able to use the 1 3/16" socket to get it off without any damage to the bolthead. I did first heat the nut a little with my MAP torch to loosen-up that loctite they use. That seemed to help loosen a lot of the bolts.

I used a breaker bar. My little air compressor and impact gun just didn't have what it took to budge that bolt. I think the loctite and 369 lb/ft of torque made it the most difficult bolt to get off/on and second in the PITA category. Second only to popping the actual pitman arm off.

Hmmn- 1.19" is larger than 1.1875" (1 3/16") by .0025" difference. I would suggest a 1 3/16" - 6 point socket, such as an impact socket. A 30mm socket may not fit on a 30.2mm nut.

It should be a 30mm but a 1 3/16" may work too.
There are almost no SAE nuts or bolts on these trucks.

I'm almost positive it does take a 30mm socket. I called everywhere within a 40 mile radius to find one and couldn't, so my choices became a crescent wrench or a 1 3/16" slightly loose fitting socket.

thanks guys, especially for the heat idea. i have the bolt out, the bracket off, both front springs and shackles off, and the left side hanger and bash bar off. now all i have to do is take the right side off and devise some way to get the pitman arm off. Advance Auto still has theirs out on a loan, so i think i may need to go buy one somewhere.

A puller is absolutely necessary to get the pitman arm off. Doing it any other way and you'll more than likely end-up with a broken center shaft. (I know you know that strokin, it's just for anyone that may find this post doing a search).

mattd17- It's been well over 15 yrs since my Army tour in Alaska, so I'm not sure about things up there anymore, but here in the lower 48 most auto-parts stores have a "tool loan" program where they don't technically charge you for borrowing specialty tools. The down side is that they do however charge your CC until you return the tool and it may take up to 2 weeks before they credit your account back. Another drawback is they only have x number of the same tool, and if it's out when you need it your project can come to a screeching halt. But it is good for things like pitman arm pullers or strut compressors that you may only need once in a blue moon.
