Question 400 with aussie heads piston question

I am getting ready to overhaul my 351m and turn it into a 400. I have bought a
set of aussie heads with scorpion roller rockers and a comp cams XE256 and was
wondering if it is worth it to buy the Badger pistons that TMeyer has. I was planning on going with the stock 400 pistons but I would love to here some of your opinions to see if its worth the extra cost on the bottom end of the engine.

Just to clairify, The flat top pistons are Badger and are a cast piston, (and currently impossbile to get) The new pistons for the Aussie heads are a Hypereutectic piston and made by Keith Black, will give you 9.5:1 with the Aussie head.

The Badgers would make the compression too high and would not provide any quench area. The pistons TMI has above are the proper piston to use with Aussie heads.

the stock 400 pistons will also not provide any quench to speak of, and a rather high compression ratio. the TMI KB pistons are the way to go with Aussie heads unless you have a lifetime supply of exceptionally high octane fuel. money well spent.

I just got my keith blacks in (thanks Tim) and they are sweet looking- almost hate to hide them in the bore. Also gotta run the cam specs for dynamic compression. Trying to locate the data for mine. Tim built one that ran on 87 pump but the cam listed for the build looks to be more aggressive than the xe 256. I had a hyd roller cam spec'd similar to the 256 so I'm asking the same question...once I find the spec sheet...again.

So Tim...how difference do you see if someone is using the xe256 compared to the one you used.

thanks

Hey Beensack, with the Aussie heads you really need an appropriate piston to go with them or you might be in a world of trouble. BTW, I am thinking of a build very similar to yours. You'll have to let me know when its done, especially if you go with Tim's pistons. So far my plans are upping my 351M to a 400 (got the crank already), using Aussie heads (got em already) with Tim's pistons, using either a comp cams DEH or XE in the 255-265 range, scorpion or similar rollers, headers and free flowing exhaust. The only major difference will probably be that I am going to try to use fuel injection. I am really curious to see how the XE-256 will do with the aussies and pistons to match.

make sure you have tim or someone run the combination of the oz, kb pistons and cam as the 256 may not drain enough compression to avoid detonation- cam selection will be a HUGE consideration given the limitation of other parts. I'm thinking his cam was closer to the 265 which (guessing) allows as much as .2 - .3 more static compression than the 256. Operating or Dynamic Compression is everything and those # have not been available yet.

I Actually Have Looked At Tims Site And I Think That I Am Going To Take My Motor There Because I Only Live About 250 Miles From His Shop. It Alls Depends On How Much Cash I Have. Spending All That Money On Those Heads And Then Trying To Put The Whole Motor Together Myself Would Be Dumb For Me To Do. So I Will Have To Keep You All Posted And Thanx For All The Info.

he had the motor that he built for the project listed for sale on the site...and that is a good deal...I will have that much or more in mine putting it together myself. i went higher end on a couple of parts but still....Hot rod mags engine was estimated for abut the same cost and probably not as good.
