Front axle u-joint

Front axle u-joint
In the middle of my ball joint replacement I now see that my front axle shaft universal is dry/squeaky and needs to be replaced. There are no snap rings on these u-joints, so do I just press them out? They are not recessed and in fact they look like the caps protrude from the yokes about 1/16". I would like to believe that replacement of the whole axle shaft assembly is not required! Any pointers?

It is my understanding that the axle u-joint is replaceable just like the drive shaft u-joints. Same procedure really.
Large socket on one end.
smaller socket on the other end
Large c-clamp
That should do it! OF course..."IF" I am wrong...I am sure someone will point it out.

The good replacements are the one's with out the grease fittings by the way. They are more expensive and are usually lifetime warr. The joints have clips on the inside. Be carefull to bang them when removing because its easy to bend those parts..kinda have to shock them to keep them moving..when removing.

Thanks 99f350sd for the clip location. There was so much rust and scale that they were completely hidden. As it turned out, I spent more time trying to drive out the old C-clips then pressing out the old u-joint! Hopefully the replacement will last as long as the original ~108K miles.
