Anyone here have any outboard experience? I have an old 1973 Evinrude 40 hp that is spittering and sputtering bad. I know the wiring is kinda crappy, but would it cause it to do that? Or is is possible that the carb is shot? I looked at it not too long ago and it looked decent. The floats looked almost brand new? I had it at a marina and they ran a compression test, and that came back great, so I wouldnt think its in the head. Hopefully one of you can help me. Thanks.
more than likely a wiring issue if you ruled out the carb. hopefully you aren't using last yr gas. the old evinrudes lost spark after 8-10 yrs so don't be upset by this. new plugs, plug wires, coil, and if that fails you may need to pull the flywheel and replace the contacts, condenser, etc. none of this is expensive if you have any mechanical apptitude. the worst part is getting the fly wheel off. you need a GOOD wheel puller. i just did a '67 60 hp last spring that had no spark at all for $110. top to bottom.(electrical) that sob starts by key or pull cord like its brand new. good luck
I can deal with $110!! I am sure we can figure it out, and if we have a hard time, I have a friend that is a retired engineman from the Navy that has a full line of Evinrude manuals that "retired" with him. Lets see what a case of beer and a few bucks will get me
You might want to try replacing the sparkplugs and seeing what that does. Rule out the simple stuff before you start tearing it apart.
If the carb is clean and new plugs dont fix the problem, then Id say you have some sort of problem elsewhere in the ignition system.
