How do I find my axle ratio? I have the 6.8L V10. I was told by an axle specialist that if I have towing package that the ratio should be 4.10 standard.. But all the excursions come with hitch and wiring, how do I know if I have towing package? Just bought my excursion about 1 month ago and will be heading out on trip in two weeks.. I want to be ready.
Look at your door jamb sticker/label. My '01 4WD Limited V10 has code "C1” which equates to 3.73 limited slip (F250 / Excursion) IAW factory service manual.
Thank you, I have 3.73 also. I am going to have my local shop change it to 4.30.. The cost is less than 600.00 so I thought why not. Is the 4.30 the recommended for towing around 8000 lbs or should I go 4.56 .. Or even higher.? I go up alot of hills, my old 1996 Dodge ram 2500 is tired and heats up alot. Hoping great success with excursion.
4.30s give you an 11,000lb. towing capacity. Your truck now is rated at 9600 (if it's a 4x4). Have you trailered with it in its current setup?
BTW, your axle "specialist" should rethink his title. V10 Excursions never were available with 4.10s. Only V10 to get 4.10s were the 3V V10s in the 05+ Super Duty and older E-series vans.
Gears (4.30 or 4.56) depend on tire selection. If you're going to keep it around stock size then the 4.30 would be the better choice. If you're thinking 35's then i would go with the 4.56's. No matter what you choose you'll be pleased with the performance increase over the 3.73's.
My 2000 4X4 Excursion came with factory 4:30 gears. There is a metal tag under one to the bolts that holds the rear end cover on that identifies the the type gears in the rear end.
I have towed once but level area no hills. The truck did great, but want best performance possible. I have a 4x2 V10. Sorry I forgot about 4x2 or 4x4.. Thank you for all the good advice, this is a good forum.
The $600 cost quote would be the cheapest gear replacement in about 5 years. Average cost now is around 750-800. Gears and install kits run about 350-550 and another 300 to install them. Either this guy is doing it for little profit, or he is not replacing something. I hope you know him well. A guy I know well that has lifted 3 vehicles for me would do 2 axles for 1400 and that was a deal.
My '00 was 2wd V10 with 3.73LS. We towed extensively with it and I always regreted not ordering the 4.30. I made it somewhat better with a Gear Vendors unit. 3rd- over worked well. I figured the equivalent ratio was what a 4.10 would be in OD. The 4.30 would have been better, even with th GV.
The 05 is 3.73LS axle also, except it's behind a 6.0L.
