Thanks to you guys, I've discovered that my new (00) Ranger is equiped with the off road package, and I've also determined my axle ratio, and thus towing capabilities.
So...one more question...how do you determine whether or not your ranger is equipt with the towing package?
Is there a hitch reciever (a square pipe under the bumper that a hitch slides into, that is bolted to the frame), or is there a ball on the bumper?
The bumper hitch does not have the towing package.
And i think there is a tranny cooler (but not sure since mine has a tranny cooler, but no hitch reciever)
The only way to know if the truck came from the factory with the towing package would be to look at the window sticker, or possibly scan the VIN number at the dealership. Simply having a receiver hitch on the truck now doesn't guarantee it was equipped for towing from the factory.
As a reminder, the towing packages on trucks many times include more than just a hitch. Anyone can put on a hitch. But the OEM packages usually give you lower gears, wiring for trailer lights, and a transmission cooler, and possibly other goodies on different models.

I'll check out the truck for the other stuff. IF it means anything the truck has a "step bumper."
I bought the truck last weekend from a local Ford dealer. Had a horrible leak that soaked the back of the headliner, and flooded the back of the cab, but they fixed it at no cost to me. So--they've given me great service (including a second key <$80 value> at no cost to me)...but they didn't list things like the Off Road package or rear end gears when I bought the truck. Through FTE I've found out that I have 4.10 gears and the off road package (bigger wheels, stiff suspension, skid plates <rad,trans,gas>), so I'm just lookin' to see what other surprises I might find.
I notice you have the 3.0L. If it has the "leaf" logo next to the Ford emblem on the tailgate, it is a FFV (Fuel Friendly Vehicle) model and can run off unleaded fuel or E85 alternate fuel.
Also, I'm not sure but I think you have the 5r55e automatic tranny which is a 5-speed automatic. I could be wrong on that because some of the 3.0s did come with a 4-speed auto. instead. The tranny cooler will be mounted in front of the main radiator if it's there.
Put your truck in 2WD. Then park it and get under it. Grab the front driveshaft with your hands and see if you can spin it. If you can = you have the PVH hubs in the front end that engage when you select 4WD. These are very problematic and you'll want to keep a close eye on them. If you can't spin the front driveshaft with your hands while in 2WD, you have the newer system that is bulletproof. Ford made the change in the middle of the 2000 model year so it's a test you have to do. (Or you can pop the hubcap off a front wheel and see if you see a nut (new system) or a black plastic hub with a screen (old system) ).

I don't /think/ I have a tranny cooler from what you said. There didn't appear to be any extra cooling grates infront of the radiator, but I can't say for sure.
I read on another forum that 2000 3.0's had 4spd OD auto's so I assumed that's what I have...nothing I can find on the truck tells how many gears the tranny has...just that it's an auto OD tranny. So...I guess...what's the best way to tell how many gears I've got? On a manual tranny it's obvious, but like I said, this is the first auto I've owned, so I can't say I know...accept to try to pay real close attention when I take off down the road.

Ok...the sun's come up and I've done some lookin' around. Here's what I found out. The truck is an FFV which is nice since I drive through Iowa (major ethanol promoter) on my way to visit family.
I also have the newer hub style (nut, not plastic screen).
There IS a cooling grid/grate/whatever in front of the actual radiator, but could this be the for the A/C, not a tranny cooler?
As I said before, I have a "step bumper" w/o a hitch reciever BUT I do have a trailer wiring hook up that appears to be factory installed (or atleast installed by someone who knew exactly what they were doing).
I'm still not sure about the tranny, or how to find out for sure. I took off this morning and counted four gears, but when I hit seventy OD kicked in and dropped the rpm to about 2500 rpm.

4th gear is OD. What you felt kick the rpm down is the torque converter locking up, which some people mistake for an additional gear. Sounds like you got a 4 speed.
Look at the sticker in your door jamb. It'll have a single-chacter transmission code listed there. What does it say? You can decode it to see if you have the 4-speed or 5-speed. Mine is "D" for 5-speed. You will see "T" for 4-speed I believe.
Otherwise, sounds like you bought a really nice truck! Take care of it, service it regularly. It'll last you a LONG time with the setup you've got.
Thanks for all the help guys. The tranny code on my truck is T, ie 4 spd. I knew the tranny didn't shift at 70, but didn't know how else to explain the sudden drop in rpm.
