Yes, you will hear a click when the clutch kicks in if your outside the truck with the hood open. You can tell if the clutch is working by looking at the pulley, if the center of the pulley is rotating then the clutch is engaged if the center is not spinning with the pulley then the clutch is disengaged. Freon should allways be weigh in. 40 psi on the low side is to high imo.

yeah, 40 psi is a little dangerous. is the compressor cycling? you may just need to breakdown and pay to have it diagnosed.

Did you jump out the pressure switch on the accumulator? Once you jump out the switch the compressor will click and start working. If that happens you have a bad pressure switch. If not, then check to see if you getting power to the compressor clutch while switch is jumped out.

One simple test, i didnt read the whole page so here goes. Turn on truck run ac and tap front clutch if its stuck. What happens is that the magnatism on the clutch isnt working just like new. Mine has 420k. If its just stickin save some money and do the following. Pull bolt from the front of the compressor, remove one shim put back together and wahlah. Mechanic fixed mine just like that. (This mech is an old guy whose been on the job for 40 years---my pop)

ok...ran outside and ran the truck and a/c....compressor does kick on jusst fine and everything seems to cool normal.....prob seems to be compressor never kicks off...stays on the whole time. Shouldn't this thing cut off at some point? A guy here with me asked about my shutoff valve to the heater core....i am using the vacuum hose type.....if there is a hole in the vacuum hose, would this affect a/c temp?

it wont kick off too often. It will run pretty constant with a properly charged system. Since you are at 40psi it is a little high so the compressor will run longer. If it is running and the lines are cold, then its either the dryer, expansion valve, or your condensor.

He said that he put a can of freon in the system and that the pressure went from 30psi to 40psi that tells me that the clutch is engaged.

The low pressure switch is located on the accummlator and has two wires going to the switch, unplug and jump the two poles togather to engage clutch.

one question though about the psi.....the can i was using says that if outside temp is 90 deg f....then pressure should be approx 45 to 50.....and outside temp down here in texas is well over 90....i used the whole can and it only went up to 40....so were those instructions off?

You prob will have to use it under normal use, when it blows hot see if you cant just pull over and pop the hood, I used the ol all in one tool to smack the front clutch. If its cool now all components are working fine until it gets warm, which is the clutch not engaged. Mine always worked right off and then while driving it went out. Just bumps in the road, full moon, kids in the truck, whatever it feltlike

I suggest when questions are off on the pressure call a mech or a shop. You can go to ebay and find a ford info dvd for pretty cheap.

ac issues

The evaporator coil could be plugged slightly, not letting the air transfer completely.

That isn't how you charge a system!
your pressure changes in the system by the amount or lack of amount of heat load.
charge must be weight in.

well i like the idea and i will just pull over when i feel hot air and see if the clutch is still engaged...if not tap it and see if i need to remove a shim..that will be the quick and easy...and less costly way!

Appreciate all you guys input!
