On my 1969 1/2 ton I don't seem to find a way to drain the lube from the rear end. The plug to check the level is there on the front drivers side of the housing, but I really want to drain and flush the housing. How can I do that?
Yep, go down to the auto parts store, pick up a new gasket then pull the cover. Gravity will do the rest. Clean the two mating surfaces, install the new gasket and replace the cover. Shouldn't take you more than 15-20 minutes. Oh yeah, don't forget to refill the differential.
Maybe I'm confused - what cover on a Ford 9" rear end? To remove the carrier the axels must be removed. The later Ford 8.8" rear end has a cover on the back.

Sorry mate,
If he mentioned having a cover,I would have instructed him to do it that way.
It is a 9" without a cover, You have to remove the diff.
Or jack one side a lot higher than the other after you pull the axles,
and Then, you have to figuire out a way to flush it.

OOOPS, sorry for the confusion. One had to assume that it was a 9" rearend as the poster didn't specify rearend type, even though some 1/2 tonners came with Dana's.
