Need some advice on installing a valley pan gasket on my 400. Should I use a spray adhesive between the heads and the gasket, or should I put them on dry? Any sealer at all between the gasket and the intake? I am already planning on throwing the rubber end seals out and using RTV silicon instead.
You got it, if you use adhesive at all, just between the heads and valley pan, "High Tack" is the recommended material (I think) you dont need much either. Just make sure you use the high temp RTV around the water passages too. Be liberal with the use on the front and back of the manifold. cleaning off excess is better than taking it apart again. It seems to me it really just holds it in place and has no other value.

Yes, also just for my own good, check to see if there are 2 smaller ports at the end of the manifold. I thought they were water passages, and I SWEAR I saw them on my Edelbrock, I cant really say if I saw those holes on the head side though. There is some good info on how you can utilize the pan in other ways too along with composite gaskets in other threads in this same forum. The next time mine comes off, I am doing the composite gaskets.
The exhaust crossover is in the middle. The air injection passages are on the ends. There are absolutely NO water passages on a 335 series engine intake manifold. The 351C/M/400 engines have a dry intake manifold! Check out some of the other posts on the subject in this forum with the search function...
Makes me wonder what else Edelbrock got wrong, or if uh maybe the instructions were of a general nature (not that I follow instructions to well, but I do read them)
(Permatex?) High Tack is a brush-on product, not a spray; and IMO, should be used on both sides of the valley pan gasket and is THE product to use. Do read and follow the instruction on the bottle, I think it wants some set time before assembly. GL
Yes it is a brush on product, I used it with the cute little ball type applicator. Spray adhesive would actually work though if you plugged the holes. I am still just keeping my tail between my legs as I have done a manifold on a Cleveland for my 70 Mach 1 and my 400, both times was under the impression that those front little ports were for water. Could be worse I guess, I could be working on a Chevy. Beartracks you are right about all of the Chevy products. It seems like everything is for them in the magazines and all that. I have a deep hatred for most Chev engines. I dont even like the small block.
