I looked at a '71 over the weekend that had a 'vinyl' roof - I thought. I didn't really look very close, but I thought I could see it peeling up where the chrome strip along the back of the cab was missing. I assumed it was a 'glued on' vinyl, but maybe not. If its the 'textured' paint, is that very difficult to sand off??
Yeah the simulated vinyl roofs were optional starting in '70, black only. It was a spray-on textured paint. You could even have the dealer convert your car top complete with simulated seams in either black, white or beige.
I'm not a paint expert but I think it would be easier to strip it off than to try and sand it out.
Actually, they started that sprayed-on roof texture in 69. I had one a few years ago. In the wreckers a few months ago, I did see another 69 with a padded vinyl roof. This was obviously aftermarket and was probably pretty nice when new.
Very interesting mk, the sales brochures say it was all new for ’70. Wonder if it was a mid-year intro like the 302, the ’69 brochures make no mention of it. Here’s something else, the texture paint from the dealer has a C8 part number, hmmm…
