Special edition vinyl roof?

Did Ford produce a special edition truck that had a vinyl roof with those buttons on it like an old hot rod upelstery seat?

I love one ton dually trucks and saw this truck behind some guy's house. I beleive it was a '58 - '60 Ford. Regular cab, it had dual headlights, if that helps to determine the year. Thje truck was painted re and white with black line seperating the two colors. The full roof of the truck was a red vinyl with buttons spaced a good distance appart.

I don't have any pics of the truck. It was in excellent shape. I saw it a year ago.

No Ford truck ever had a "factory installed" vinyl roof.

In the mid 1960's, Ford came out with a special wrinkle paint, in either black or white, that when applied to a car or truck, mimiced the look of a real vinyl roof.

This was a dealer installed procedure only.

There's an FTE member (user name: fun_suv) that has a 1969 F100 in baby blue with one of the black wrinkle painted roofs > >

Mebbe some of this paint will turn up on fleabay, here's the original p/n's.

C7AZ-19500-Y .. "Wrinkle" Paint-White / 1 Qt. Can

C7AZ-19500-Z .. "Wrinkle Paint-Black / 1 Qt. Can

Old hot rod upholstry: Diamond shaped tuck and roll with or without buttons in either leather, or naugahyde.

All the poor 'ol Nauga's were killed off as a result of the demand for this type of hyde. ;-)

That's exactly what that means. You need to pull that truck out from the forest, clean it up and fix it up. It's too nice to let sit and rot under the trees.

Honestly you're miles ahead for not having a vinyl top, those things are a rust nightmare and it blows my mind to see people putting them on restored cars today, I don't care if it's "correct". It's nutz to think folks spent $10-25k on paint and who knows how much more on the rest of the restoration, just to ruin it with a vinyl top.

To be fair, anyone restoring a car today and installing a vinyl top is doing it with a car that will never see weather, so the possibility of it soaking up 20 years of rain and rusting under the vinyl is nil.

The other thing is vinyl top cars many times were not painted on the roof from the factory, barely had a light shot of primer, which caused the problem. If the roof is fully painted before the vinyl is glued on, there's even less of a possibility of corrosion.
