I lost the keys to my bronco this weekend. I want to put in a new ignition switch in my 79 bronco. not worried about the door locks.
How do I do this? is it difcult? any thing special to watch out for? any help or advice would be really helpful.
It's a little difficult without the key. DONT try and chisel out the old lock cylinder, the impact will damage other parts of the column.
Break off the "wings" from the old cylinder where the key goes in. Get a large flat blade screwdriver with wrench flats up near the havdle. Tap the screwdriver firmly into the keyway. Push in on the screwdriver as hard as you can while turning it with a wrench to the RUN poition. Push the pin and remove the cylinder. This will shear the lock cylinder internally without damaging the column.
There used to be a tool available for this very thing called a Ford Bypass Key. It fell into the same legal category as lock picks and lockout tools. The last time I looked for one, I couldn't find one.
Thanks for the advice lsrx. last night I couldnt figure how to get it out without breaking it. But I dont have a key for it so doesnt matter if it breaks. I didnt think about that. So I took out the switch and every thing. While trying to get this apart I broke the plug housing and the springs on the back of the switch. I will check my parts truck for a working switch tonight.
