Thanks in advance for your help!!
I have a 99 f150. The rear brake lights dont work. However the 3rd brake light, above the rear window, works fine. Checked all fuses, bulbs, and wiring connections under the truck. I have a feeling the problem is in the steering colum. Is there anything else I should check first??
Do your signal/4-way flashers work? The tail/stop light circuit routes through the flashers. The third light is a direct connection. That's why the brake light flashes when you have the brake on at a stop light with the turn signal going. Replace both flashers.
Actually it does not route through the flashers, but routes through the turnsignal switch. Ford calls this the "multi-function" switch. They have had numerous problems with this switch, and also with the wiring being too tight and getting pulled out of the plug to this switch. If you have a wiring problem, sometimes you can move the tilt wheel and it will start working again. So your column theory is probably correct.
Something you have to watch out for is a lot of Explorers have yellow turnsignals in the rear. This is the European way of doing things and is becoming more and more common.
In this type of configuration, the brake lights do not go through the turnsignal switch(multi-function switch) but instead have their own dedicated red lights in the rear, with seperate amber lights for the turnsignals.
The American way of doing things is having one red bulb that has a filament that has two jobs, being the turnsignal and brake light all in one. I believe your f150 is like this, so the brakes will run through the turnsignal switch.
It was the multi function switch on the steering colum. I had also had a problem with wind shield wipers coming on at random times. Replacing the switch,($220 installed) fixed both problems.
