Hey guys. My 89F150 is leaking real bad. Its a shame because my 85 has 200+k on it with no leaks but this motor was supposed to be a new factory replacement 60k ago and its horrible. My tranny is leaking bad as well so im pulling it out today and figured why not do the rear main seal at the same time since im sure its causing problems. Ive already replaced the pan gasket and it seems to just have gotten worse since then. Do you guys have any tips or tricks for pulling a one piece rear main. Ive never done it before and I need to have the truck back on the road by monday.
Before you pull that seal pull one of the driveplate bolts and make sure they have
had sealer puton the threads. The crankshaft is bored thru the flange and they leak thru if not sealed. A small drill thru the seal as close to the block as you can and a metal
screw put into the hole and cutting pliers to jack it out has always worked for me.
and just use a seal driver and tap it in slowly? should i put anything on the new seal before i tap it in?
I just now got the transfer case out. Man what a pain. This was so much easier on my old bronco. The Tcase wouldnt come out with the front gas tank skid plate on. It needed another 1/2" before it would drop out! And two of the bolts were being a pain on the skid plate. I ended up cutting them off with a hack saw(didnt want to set the house on fire). I hope to be done and have this thing back together tonight, we will see.
At present a lot of guys use a thin cating of rtv, I myself always used Aviation Permetex the thin stuff in a can with a brush # 3 I think .Make sure you have the seal flush with the block so it is 90 degs. to the shaft , they don't last long if they are scuffing at a slight angle. Somewhere on this form is a way to make a driver out of a piece of plastic pipe, I can't tell you where perhaps do a search. The last one of those seals I bought I think they were around 11 bucks, today they most likely set you back closer to 20. I wouldn't want to screw one up as it's 7 gallons of gold, might be worth looking into the pipe. Find the right plumber and he'll give you a drop off piece. My look at it. Good luck
i think advance wasnts $9 for the seal. I have a bunch of various seal drivers and im hoping one will fit. I got the tranny out(after alot of headache) and got the extension housing split cleaned up and reassembled with some 3m gasket maker rtv made for trannys. Ive still got the clutch and flywheel bolted to the motor but i needed another break. I dont think it will be done tonight but I might get a second wind.
the seal was $14 from advance and I didnt even need it. The rear main on the truck was dry. Instead I noticed a really bad leak coming from the back of the valve cover. If I didnt need to have the tranny off for something else I would have been really kicking myself. But I did get to pull the oil pan back off and fix the gasket i put on. It wasnt seated right in the back corner by the splash guard.
