Oil Change

Only had my 04 F350 powerstroke for about 2 months now. So far no real problems, but I'm keeping a close eye on the coolant level. My question is, how often do you do oil changes? The owner's manual says 12500 km. The dealer's maintenance sticker shows 5000 km. What's the average. I use to do most of my own work on my old F150, So I'm also trying to find some info on the F350s & powerstroke diesels. Haynes doesn't make a book as new as 04, so are there any alternatives other than shelling out hundreds of dollars for the service set of books.

I always buy the factory service manuals from Helms, yes expensive but if you plan on keeping the truck well worth the cost.

I change mine every 7,500 miles. I also take an oil sample at each change. So far no problems with 25K miles on it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was thinking 10k would be about right. Where would I find an FTE manual. I've be steering away from Ebay, been burned a couple of times now. I might go for the shop manuals if I can find a deal. I was thinking maybe someone had a book, like Haynes. I'm not looking to be able to tear the engine down and rebuild; but something that will give me some specs and service outlines on the F350. Brakes, fluid changes, front end servicing, general troubleshooting, etc. That sort of thing.

I also change mine at 5K, I also rotate the tires and drain the HFCM at his internval. Been using this method since new, got 50,000 miles out of the stock BFG tires. Just purchased new BFGs 295/75/16 and hope to get 50K out of these also sticking to the same maintenance schedule and should have no problem doing so since it is the same tire, just larger. As for the oil change, 5K seems fine, I think I could go longer if I absoutley had to. Also doing an oil change every 5K means every 3rd oil change your fuel filters will get changed also, so it is easy to do it at the same time. And, as an added bonus you will smell like Rotella and Diesel, an excellent cologne that not even Ralph Lauren could dream up. Drives the ladies WILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very true, I read my wife my comment and she kindly called me a "Freak." I'll just keep living in a dreamworld.

My wife's ok with the grease and oil. But she doesn't like the occasional spider that finds its way into the house from the garage.

I mentioned your post to my wife. She thinks we are all nuts! She still doesn't understand, nor probably ever will, why I get a smile every time that diesel engine fires up! She is also tired of me telling her about the 60 ton M60 diesel engine tank I used to ride in too!! Nothing like the smell of diesel in the morning.......
