I now have put fiberglass over my welds. I am wondering what a good sander is to buy. I want one pretty good that runs easy and leaves a nice finish. Can anyone recommend a sander . Should I go with air or electric? If I get electric I can use it elswhere too but would like some input on the best way to go.. All advice greatly appreciated....
I like air sanders for body work because it generates an awful lot of super fine dust which might not be good for the armature of an electric motor. I have a jitter bug style and a straight line sander from Harbor Freight and they have held up well and performed great when I was working on my body work. I used sand paper from the local body shop, have heard the harbor freight sandpaper is not very good. Good luck!
I have a Porter Cable DA sander (electric). I got it as a polisher from Meguiar's (GA100), but recently needed it for sanding and it does great! It has variable speed, and is lightweight. I used hook and loop sandpaper. I only had a 15gal 3hp compressor and the DA's use a lot of air I am told.
The compressor recently kept up with me entirely while priming. I primed the inside and outside of a full size truck and only stopped to mix more primer. It kept up totally.. I was using a cheap gun from ebay too.
i use a 6 inch grinder with a 36 grit paint stripping disc on the fibreglass as this only has to be roughly finished then i use a dynabrade or a small palm air sander to rough finish the bog or bondo or whatever you guys call it, then finish all "bondo" with a board file and board file sheet by hand, machine sanders are not used to get bondo or bog straight, that job can only be done properly by hand! dont get me wrong though you can get a very good finish using machine sanding but not spot on!
