This may sound like a dumb question but I can't find my dipstick on my truck. Where is the dipstick supposed to be? THe truck is a 77 F150 with a 460 Licoln motor in it(not sure of year). I looked all over the place and didn't even see where a dipstick should go in. I'm a good mechanic and don't get stumped like this to often. Any input. Thanks
The car engine had the dipstick pass through the passenger side of the front timing cover. The truck version had the dipstick on the driver’s side passing outside of the exhaust manifold and down to the pan. The principal difference being that the car version had a front sump pan and the truck had a rear sump.
Since the motor came from a car it would have originally had a front sump, but then it would have been converted to a rear sump. I suspect the project did not quite get finished and the dip stick tube never installed.
I had a similar problem--caused by me. I assembled my 460 and got a nice looking timing cover installed--without a dipstick. I ended up drilling out my timing cover and installing a dipstick tube in place, but I do not recommend that. I got lucky and it worked. I had an old, car type that I could measure, etc. Good luck with it.
