Im working on my 79 F150 4x4 project and finally got around to replacing the rag joint. I removed the 2 bolts that holds the steering shaft to the gear box but I cannot get the studs out the holds the rag joint to the gear box. Any one else have this problem? Any suggestions?
You need to cut off the studs to remove them. The replacement rag joint kit will have bolts to replace those studs.
After reading a bit about this problem with loose steering on my 79 F100 2WD I am starting to think that this rag joint is the main culprit as my previous 78 4WD had slop in the steering but nowhere near as much even though there were more joints in the steering to wear and one of the unijoints was shot. So where do you get a replacement rag joint - are they a genuine part or are they made by an aftermarket company
I bought mine at napa for like $10. Its napa part number 630-1012 and it was on one of the turning racks that sell all types of common replacement items. Hope that helps
I need instructions on how to replace the rag joint on a 1977 F350. Please be specific on all steps of replacement. Some one has suggested that part of the steering column must be loosened but that all they said. Please help. Thank you, Mike
