I thought I saw a while ago, a post that Kwikkordead had replied to that went into great detail on the drill and tap size and number of threads left showing on the EGT Probe once installed in the manifold. I tried to search for it and had no luck, does anyone have a link to it?
The directions I have state 2 or three different drill sizes and I'm not sure which to follow.
I see it's 1/4" NPT thread on the insert, and see the letter R drill, and then a 3/8" drill, or .334 size drill bit, then a .349 or something.
I'm confused, and I'm not a machinists so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Todd
I can't remember either. But I want to say that you need to be sure that it is indeed 1/4" npt that you are working with. You wouldn't be the first to drill a hole that was too big.
My probe was 1/8 npt and I just kept stepping up drill bit sizes to an 11/32 as per the tap instructions. No problem. I don't think I even ran the tap in past half way. It will just keep enlarging the hole and the npt uses an interference fit. Remember, you can always back out the probe and tap it further if needed but it's far more difficult to correct if the hole is overtapped.
I believe if you get the adapter for the coupling in about 1/3 of the way, you will be fine as the probe should be well inside the pipe at that point. Don't forget the high temp thread sealant.
Wouldn't the band clamp style pyro eliminate the need for drill and tap? I have heard lots of pros and few cons on using the band clamp method.....Seems like if it gives trouble, just cut the clamp and put on a new one....something I have been considering for a while.......but the dentist got my exhaust money.....so I am back on the "mods waiting" list......
That is an option Dave. It's really not that hard though, and my probe is right there where I want it to be. Sorry I missed you in Nashville. Maybe next time. I've been a little busy with the truck.
As for the dentist, my teenage son is in braces. I just like to go there and look at the guy whose car payments I am making from time to time.
Nashville sucked for the car...it was trashed.....and the broken tooth took up all of the exhaust money AND the gauge money.....I should have become a dentist when I wanted to way back in the early 80's.....Nashville again in August....
