Ok just bought this from my parents, it has like 90k miles on it, so I figured I'd go through and do a tuneup on it. So I changed the fuel filter, pcv valve, air filter, oil, and plugs. Well I went ahead and bought some Bosch Platium plugs, just cause I figured they were the best (until reading this thread) and ended up replacing the closest 4 plugs, damn the others look like a bitch...Anyway I gapped them correctly and everything, but it runs, just really hesitates, and backfires now. So I got on this forum and found everyone saying go with Motocraft only plugs?? Could this be the problem, I'm running 4 original motorcraft plugs, and 4 new bosch plugs. I figured I'd pull them out and check them, and install them again, but if the problem is the brand then I won't even bother with these...I've also read theres some post on here about spark plugs, they said it used to be stickied, but I can't find it....Any help would be appreciated on this. I figured once I fixed the backfiring I'd just take it to someone to do the other 4 that way I don't have to kill myself trying to get to the other plugs. Thanks again.
A lot of people here have said it, but I'm not sure I agree with it, that Motocraft is the only way to go. I have not had experience with Bosch in my truck, so I cannot comment. I, like you, think they are a premium plug. I am current using Denso's in my truck and they are fine and have been so for some time.
You may have a faulty high voltage wire. I haven't even looked under the hood at my Expedition wiring so I don't know if this is possible, but I once had a car with a faulty wire between the coil and distributor. It idled perfectly but wouldn't rev up. No power at all.
No not all 8 plugs are in, just 4 new motorcraft plugs, 4 still originals, those back 4 were a little bit harder than I thought to get to. But it's no longer backfiring now, ran it for about 20mins, and it's definately running better, but still seems to lack a little power. I am going to have a friend do the other 4 plugs because I really don't want to mess with them.
Make sure your friend knows what he's doing and torques them corectly and doesn't cross-thread them. Otherwise you could be a candidate for an ejected plug.
