Went to get replacement plugs for our 97 (5.4) last week, requested Motorcraft (that's what I usually use), $7 each at AZ?! I'm assuming some sort of platinum tipped Motorcrafts, didn't look at them.
Anyway, the only 'regular' plugs they had for it were from Bosch. Anyone running those?
I've read pros and cons of both types of plugs, usually go with the 'regular' plugs but won't if they're not going to perform well in this engine.
Another factor is the time to install. I'd assume the platinum tips will last longer? So if it's a long job to install the plugs that could justify platinums.
Feedback about performance using 'regular' plugs, time to install plugs, and whether you've seen longer run times from platinum plugs appreciated.
Based on the chat in many other forums and this one, it's definitely go with Motorcraft OE platinum plugs or you will have to do that nasty job again sooner than you want to. No one, no one has found a better plug in any brand or configuration for cruising or racing. It's just the best there is for that engine. Be sure you get the exact plug that came with it as changes in heads and intakes or exhausts from model to model can make a difference.
I put Bosch Plat. +4s in my wife's rig. Took me a good 4 hrs but I was babysitting the little one. I have had them in for about 30k and have not noticed anything different about them--good or bad. I just decided that the boschs had a good enough reputation that I paid the extra. I didn't know about the Motorcraft Platinums or I would have went with them. I don't plan on keeping this truck long enough to have to change them again. We have 128,000 on the truck and it drives as good as when we bough it with 38k on the clock.
