1956 F100

1956 F100
I just found out my block is a 312, the VIN # says it should be a 6. Is anyone aware of 312's being used in '56 F100's, my small research says they did not come into play until 57. I know VIN's can be wrong but could this be original equipment, if not then the swap was done in the distant past.

How do you know it is a 312? What is the block casting ID?
The 312 was stock in 56 Mercs, available as an option in all Ford cars in 56 and was a dealer available order in 57 light trucks as was the 292 in 56 light trucks.
Since all Y Blocks are interchangable, swaps were common
