I recently purchase a 59 F100; could anyone help me ID the difference between a 292 & a 312? I was told a 292 has the distributor behind the intake and the 312 in front, the truck originailly had a 223 cid, so VIN# don't help.
I can tell you this the 312 has the dist in the same place as the 292 there the same engine diffrent bore stroke there is a slite deck hieght on the block the way to tell if its either is does it look like a Y it really does the the intake sits up in th air a bit has a valley cover underneath it
Thanks for the replies and help 65F100xmas & FORDBOYpete; I'm still trying too figure it out and learning as the wrenches turn. It's tought being a shade tree mechanic but with alot of leaves missing..................
Fordboy did the trucks ever come with 312s? I know alot of 50's ford junkies and they have said the largest engine avalible in trucks at that time (50's to mid 60's) was the 292. I thought the 312 only came in cars. When I say trucks I mean F100, 250, 350 not the big boys.
I don't believe that they were shipped from the factory with the 312. Looking at some literature from my 64 the 292 it came with was the biggest y-block. When the engine needed rebuilt grandpa put a 312 block in place of the 292. It still has the original 292 heads and intake. But that is a 64 not the 50s like you guys are talking about. Plus Ford didn't do everything the same back then so who knows.

I was talking about a 64. The y-block was used from the 50's (not sure exactly) to 64, 65 in some 4x4s. I just never heard of a factory 312 in a truck.
