Rainy day and I'm laid up with a hurting foot, so I thought I'd do some small stuff. The lock cylinders are working and ready to be reinstalled. One goes in the passenger side door and one in the back door.
I disassembled the speedo cluster to restore it and found that the speedometer is probably FUBAR.
Guess I'm looking for a good, useable one.
I don't want to go to digital stuff. I really like the OEM.

 

What is wrong with the speedo? If it is frozen I have freed up several speedo heads by applying liberal light oil or WD-40 and manually working the speedo by BB the back where the cab kk e goes. There is a weep hole above there that most owners did not put oil in over the life of the truck. I put a Q-tip in my a drill, insert the Q-tip where the cable goes and turn the drill in reverse to make the needle move. With my battery powered Black and Decker I can get a speedo up to 60mph.

 

The shaft that the needle fits on is evidently broken. The needle is loose and I've tried pushing it back on with no luck.

 

Where does the oil go in? My 53 makes a lot of noise and jumps around. Oil might be the answer? Thanks

Two rear doors that is, I don't have two Panels.

 

Must be a common thing..the needle shaft was also broken on my ‘49 F-4…anyone ever have that repaired by a speedometer shop?

Makes me think of the old crap about someone going so fast that the speedo needle was rung off, heard it all my life. Physically impossible with no direct drive, just driven by magnetic"attraction". Horse hockey.
I had a great uncle, only great because he was my grandmother's brother, no reflection on his character, that used to tell that lie often. When I was a little boy I thought he was something special. Then at about age 10 when I figured out how a speedometer works, I changed my mind.

 

Yup heard that one hundreds of times over the years .
