most accurate mpg
would it be possible to put a gauge between the fuel tank and engine to measure the exact amount of fuel being consumed? this way we can get a very accurate mpg reading.

Yes, but you'll also have to install one in the return line and subtract the return from the feed. I've seen some for boats, www.floscan.com I think. Haven't really looked for the trucks.....
Why not just use the ole miles divided gallons formula. I've been doing it and it is very accurate.
