I have a 2002 Ranger FX4 with 47,000 miles on it. It has the 4.0L motor and 5spd manual tranny. Today my check engine light came on, and it won't go off. All of my fluids levels are ok, and the truck runs normal. Any ideas what might be wrong? Just checking to see if this is a common problem.
Will Auto Zone really do it for free? When the light came on in my old '95 Splash about 8 years ago, a certain auto repair shop( Pep Boys) told me it was $75 to hook it up to find out the codes.

The DPFE sensor is a common problem for this code, it controls the EGR valve & if the DPFE acts up, it can cause the EGR valve to also act out. So check it's vacuum lines, gaskets & mounting bolts, then test it. Look in the "Technical" thread atop this forum for details on the DPFE.
If the DPFE checks out ok, also check your EGR valve for excessive deposits that might cause it to stick open.
