1992 Fuel Filter replacement
Hello,
I have a 1992 Flare Side with a 4.9L I-6 and I am trying to replace the fuel filter but i can not get the fuel lines off. I bought two different types of fuel line disconnecting tools but neither one has worked...Anyone with any suggestions PLEASE help!
thanks,
dpoc

spray some WD-40 and keep pulling. My fingers were bleeding and bruised by the time I got mine off. The previous owner probably didn't know what a fuel filter was. The metal tools work best, so use those if you bought both. Keep pulling. Use a twisting motion so it never gets settled into where it is.

I used a plastic fuel line disconnect tool that came in a pack with a bunch of different sizes. You just slip it over the line and into the fitting to release it and just keep twisting and pulling and it'll eventually come off. I know the lines can definately be a pain to get loose and I had to go through the same thing..
glad it's not just me! I'm attempting the same thing on my 96 and those sumbichin fuel lines DO NOT want to come off! I'm using the metal tool, 5/16" i think it is. what's the trick? can i take some pliers to these fittings without messing things up too bad?

On my 92, I use the plastic tool. Make sure its the right size, mine are color coded, and I believe the one for the fuel filter is grey(The pump uses two different sizes). Use a twist motion, the tool should go almost all the way in, to unseat all of the little fingers. Then it should come off. Although, yo are right, it can be a little bit aggrevating.
After 2 weekends of struggling with the metal tool, I stopped by AZ last nite and got the gray plastic one. Worked like a charm.
Next challenge was getting the filter out of that dang bracket, but I finally did thanks to Mr. Visegrips. A lil gas in the eye, nostril and armpit, but what don't kill me makes me stronger right?
Thanks for letting me know about this plastic fuel fitting tool!

I changed mine on my 92 flareside with same problems.took 2 days to remove
from line the steel fingers inside the line get dent over, but with some force pulling and twisting I got the edge of fingers out and used a small straight blade screw driver to hook and pull steel clip out of line.always replace with new steel
clips from local parts store.yes their worth replacing.

haha I had the same issue, took me a while to take off, especially with the tight space. quick question, on my hose line, there were no o-rings and I am not sure if those are required, does anyoneknow if there are supposed to be o-rings in the fuel line to make a tight seal when connecting the fuel filter to the fuel line?

I've changed the fuel filter cannister several times located along the driver's side frame... never fails to disappoint... luckily the part is cheap... depressurize the Schrader valve on the fuel rail under the hood... a Lisle disconnect tool set is best I found over the years... lying on your back... residual gas running down your hands and arms... hopefully not much on your safety-glassed face... the nasty fumes... you need "hands of steel" to insert the disconnect tool while simultaneously wiggling the line loose... work is much better than having a shop do it for a hundred dollars... and the truck down time... both undoubtedly more painful and not to be repeated...

lately it feels more like what doesn’t kill you(me), probably should have just killed you(me) but then here I am. 😬
