I know I know, I'm going thread crazy today; it's just that I've had nothing to do so I've been tinkering with my truck and finding things here and there.
So I've trying to replace my fuel filter for a while now but I can't seem to get the damned fuel lines off. Today I bought some plastic fuel line disconnect fittings that look like this:
Fuel filter looks like this:
You stick them into the fuel line ends and they are supposed to compress a spring that releases the fuel line. I got it into the end of the fuel line but I CAN'T GET THE DAMNED THING TO RELEASE! My back is killing me from tuggin' on that thing so hard. Anyone have any tips? Am I doing something wrong here?
I know man. My truck never wants to cooperate. So what do you spray them with? And then you say you cut the fuel line if all else fails? How exactly are you supposed to reconnect a broken fuel line?
good luck, they can be hard. i have replaced fuel lines for the same problem. some plastic release tool dont go deep to compress spring. u may try a metal tool.
I already bought the damned metal tool without realizing that the rings on the ends weren't small enough!! UGGHH!!! I'm so frustrated. I don't want to replace all my fuel lines.
Huh? the fuel lines on my 87 are held on the filter by a plastic clip on each one that I just pull out with a set of pliers, then the lines pop right off (sometimes I gotta tug a little harder than I want to), and my filter comes with two new plastic clips. The spring compressor you bought is used to disconnect the fuel lines where they come into the motor.
Post a pic of your filter and the lines connected to it, and I might be able to help more.
from what ive heard your supposed to push the line towards the filter after you push the tool on the line (i used the blue one shown above for my '94 with an I-6). on mine we just pulled the line real hard and it came off. if pulled to hard ive heard that the line will break. heres a link to a fuel filter question i put out here a couple weeks ago https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...el-filter.html
Hmm. Not a bad idea. I think I'll give that a go tomorrow when the sun comes out. Thanks for the advice Quick. You're workin' overtime for me right now
Dean - The older fuel filter setup (before 93 or so) is as you describe. And from what I've heard it is much easier. I'm not real sure why they changed it. Mine is different from that.
fordtruck - I tried pushing the fuel line in/out/sideways/backways/longways/upways/EVERYWAYS. It wouldn't budge. I think I'm just gonna try to cut it like Quick said and yank it out with some vice grips. Thanks for the help guys.
Oh, thanks for the info. Is the spring lock similar on the filter similar to the spring lock on the motor? Because if it is, I'm sorry and I will start praying for you now, because when I pulled the motor out of my truck it took me and my Dad 2 hours to get those stupid things undone.
Chris I hate to see you cut your fuel line! If your lines are like mine, they are expensive, steel-braded lines.
I wonder if the removal tools you have are simply not opening up the retaining spring sufficiently to allow the lip on the filter neck to slip past? As depicted, these tools seem to have a very flat face on the leading edge that would just hang on the spring or the lip on the filter neck.
The one I've used for years is similar to these, but it has a bevelled leading edge that easily slips between the spring & the lip on the filter. The fuel line pops right off with almost no tugging.
I switch filter when I get a repaired truck ready to sell . And it still took me 3 hour to get off my truck . I broke out my metal release set. My hand were to big to get in back . Got me so wound up I decided to do oil change for a break and forgot to put oil plug in and lubed my floor . Well have a better day.
