Changing tailgate cables to metal straps

The cables are rusted and broken on the tailgate of my 84 SWB. I thought there was a way to change from the braided cable to the flat metal straps. Has anyone does this?

The straps were only used on 1980/82's and these also incorporate the latches (see pic below).

Latches are separate beginning in 1983.
