My dirt bike is "just" a bit too long for my tailgate to close...well, that and all the other crap I stuff in there if it's a multi day ride. I'm puzzled trying to find a way to lash the tailgate as far closed as it will go- there doesn't seem to be a good way, as the only attachment points are where the gate cables attach.
Anyone rig something up that isn''t a PITA when not being used? I was thinking using one of the tailgate cover screws, replacing with a small eyebolt on each far end...
Just load the bike sideways- front tire straight ahead as far toward the driver's side as you can get, pull the rear tire toward the pass. side far enough that you can get the gate shut. Shut gate, pull the tire snug against the tailgate, cinch the front straps to your liking. Here's the key now- run an extra strap from the subframe above the left footpeg to the back corner of the bed, and cinch it down nice and tight. I've hauled my bike 1000's of miles this way, never a problem. If you don't use the 3rd strap, the bike won't be very secure and will flop around toward the pass. side of the truck.
