Putting an '87 Firebird tuned port 305 w/ overdrive 700R4 in our '55. Just found out that the rear end from the Firebird is the same width, is a posi, and with rally rims from Wheel Vintuiqes we can match the Volare front and GM rear bolt patterns with the same style wheels. They even have spinner style caps like my son wants. I love it when a plan comes together !!
OK, they warned me this was coming. If I could have an origional untouched one I would appreciate that also, and KEEP IT THAT WAY ! Not cut it up like like Boyd Coddington or Jesse James would do. I like all the big three and if I was rolling in the bucks probably something German, English, or Italian. And keep going with some WW2 fighter planes etc. Seriously thanks Col Flashman and everyone for your support and good natured comments !!! Just think, its a '55 Ford that already had the Mopar front end installed and now its getting a GM drivetrain !
Dude, this could be a real buzz-killer. OK, I did estimate over the tires on the ford at first. With tires off, brake drums snug against the axle flanges I'm getting an honest 61 1/2. Initialy I was concerned that the firebird rear would be to narrow judging by the size of the car. Now I know if anything, all can be worked out with wheel backspacing. The temptation is there to fab coil spring pockets for the ford frame and mount the firebird rear as it came off the car with all its bracketry intact. I'm going to wait and make that judjment when I can get the rear under the truck. Seems a shame to remove all the higher teck stuff from that axle and replace it with spring perches.
Joe, you are probably correct. I am going from memory, and as my wife is quick to point out, mine ain't so good some times. When I put my 53 together I used the orig rear and some American TQ's with a C y bolt pattern[because I owned em]. obviously I used adapters. I used widened rear fenders because I wanted deep wheels on the back. In anticipation of eventually replacing rear end, I studied what rear might be the same width as stock plus 1" spacer on each side. Camero/Firebird seemed to be it. Joe
