51 F1...subframe question

I did a search but came up empty on what i was looking for.

Im starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel in my shop build. So I'm able to focus more on collecting parts for my '51 F1. I haven't decided on motor choice yet. If i keep my Flathead or go with a Y-Block, im going with a Mustang II. Should i decide to just throw in a SBC or preferably Olds Rocket Id prefer the GM sub-frame due to the geometry and availability of parts, as well as the initial low cost.

My question is what year Nova/Camaro/Firebird etc., clips are closest to the overall track with of the F1? How about front/rear steer? Id prefer a clip thats the same or less in width, as in my case clearance is an issue. Im not looking to do the Jag or Volare clips.
Thanks

I thought about the S-10 as well. Actually i have more experience with S-10 stuff than anything. I can probably take them apart, air bag, and reassemble them with my eyes closed. Ive probably got enough s-10 parts left over from other builds to do it. The issue with those is that they are real tight on space engine wise. Even with the SBC parts made for S-10 frame. Its not out of the question at all, just want to see what other options Ive got.

Well IMO, no matter what engine/sub-frame you use, it is unlikely that the engine will end up in the stock donor location with the rad support/firewall being the parameters. Motor mounts will probably have to be fabricated anyway, so why cut the frame to do a sub-frame (almost all tracks will be to wide) when the MII cross member is lot less radical surgery and work, (I have done both) and contrary to some opinions here, I think all the brand name aftermarket kits will adequately support any car V8. Early S10's are to narrow track.

In truth I prefer the cleanliness and simplicity of the MII as well as keeping the entire stock F1 frame. It will save me time and effort in mounting the frame horns and lining up the front sheetmetal. The overall cost of the parts is what has me exploring other options.

As far as the MII...this truck will be airbagged. Under normal circumstances i would always run a drop spindle, but with the running boards hanging so far below the frame in relation to the frame and suspension, Will i need them? I havent gotten to a point where i can pull measurements off my truck yet

A number of us are using the Jaguar XJ6 or XJ12 front suspension. It fits like it was made for the F-1. See my gallery for one example. I am not aware of anyone that bagged the Jag however. It will significantly beat the $ for the M2 and be an easier installation-frame also stays stock for body/fender mounts.

I agree with 49willard. After getting the jag subframe, I cant see any reason NOT to go with it. Wieght is comparable between the two vehicles. Gm bolt pattern on the big disc's. And it can bolt in! With a subframe you have a lot of fitment issues because all the sheet metal is determined by the location of the radiator support etc. I am welding mine in and they look pretty sleek all trimmed down. Cant beat it for fuction and price!

I have a '52 F1 that has a front clip from a '78 Monte Carlo (Cutlass, Regal). I didn't do the conversion; it had already been done when I bought the truck. The truck drives pretty good however.

My only complaint is that it lowered the truck about 3 inches (I prefer stock ride height). I am currently researching ways to raise it back to closer to the stock ride height.

I've posted some photos in my gallery if anyone is interested.
