I've pulled my valve covers four times now. I'm pretty good at it and it takes me a little under two hours by myself with normal tools.
You might look at the thread about hard cold starts. It's full of descriptions for glowplug removals with lots of tips on how to get the covers off quick.
Hi, John. I started with the drivers side as there is less to remove. It took about an hour and a half. It was straight forward with no hidden tricks that I can help you with. That fixed it on mine and I have yet to do the passenger side (with much more to remove). I will get to the passenger side if and when it needs it.
Well, as luck would have it, it's the passenger side. The good news is, it seems to be the external connector. I got poking around with the engine running, and pushed down on the harness. Had, Jan, my wife inside watching the service engine light. Every time I pushed down, the engine smoothed right out, and the light went off. Now, I am mechanically inclined, but dipped if I can see how to disconnect the connector. I reall can't see into that spot well enough. Any tricks?
I would pull the valve cover. I would be willing to bet that inside where it connects to that external harness it is loose. Not a bad job, just takes patience getting the back bolts loose. Some of them can be reached easier through the wheel well.
Good luck!

My Stroker lives!!! Took my time and did it in four hours. Once I got the valve cover off, I found the plug had come out close to half way. The harness looked good, but since I had it apart, I replaced it anyway. For $25.45 at the International garage with a package of factory shims [3]. I like going there, they know diesels, and have some big trucks to drool all over.
Can't thank you guys and this site enough. I not only saved a few hundred bucks, but I learned a few things too!!
