VIN Decoding
Can someone please help me decode the following VIN? I obviously cannot find any info to help and the Chilton manual I have doesn't seem to list the correct info for a 68.

It is supposedly from a 68 F250 Camper Special Ranger.

Well, without having my books handy, I can at least tell you that the first 4 digits (F25Y) mean it is a F250 2wd with a 360 cid FE V8. I don't believe that VIN alone will tell you whether it was a Camper Special or had the Ranger trim package.

Hello! (This is my first post to a forum- please excuse me if I make a goof!)
I have a '68 F100 with a 360 (FE series) V8 engine & 3-speed trans. VIN is F10YKD70982. As I understand it, the 4th character is the engine code, and 'Y' denotes a 360. This truck was bought new by my father-in-law & I rebuilt the original engine a few years back.
On my truck, there is a data plate on the end of the driver's door that has the VIN, plus two lines of codes. My truck reads, on the top line: 'WR' 131, 'Color' P, 'Model' F100, 'Body' 3381, 'Trans' C, 'Axle' 17, and on the bottom line the codes are 05000, 172, 3800, and 644160; however, the data plate is cropped such that I cannot read the catagory labels which are below the codes.
I suggest that you search for the trim and model data by getting these numbers and tracking them down.

The bottom catagories on the rating plate are:
MAX GVW LBS, CERT NET HP, RPM, D.S.O.
The first catagory on top is "W.B." for wheelbase in inches.

I am certain that it came from the factory with a 360. That's what the "Y" in the 4th position of the VIN means. Keep in mind, however, that very few trucks of this age have survived with the factory engines intact and original. If the engine hasn't been replaced at least once, it has almot certainly been rebuilt a time or two. It is common in rebuilds of 360 FEs to drop in a 390 rotating assembly. Thus, if you do have a 390, it means that someone either replaced the entire engine at some point with a 390, or they stroked the original block with a 390 rotating assembly. I'd say it's also quite possible that the seller lied (or just didn't know) when he claimed it was a 390 (it happens a lot), but you say you've measured the stroke, so you should know.
Incidentally, a stroke of 3.50" means it's a 360. 3.78" means a 390, and 3.98" means a 410 or 428.

I have to assume that if it has a G code and a 360FE the tranny would be a C6. I do not think they put C4's behind FE's. But I have, and most likely will be again, wrong
