Hey nice truck Groo, your VIN decodes to a F250 with a 360 2V, assembled at the San Jose plant in April of '68. That's all you can tell from the VIN.
The "G" in the Trans code means an automatic. In the 1968 Ford Truck Shop Manual it says a C4 but that's wrong. I've got a '68 F250 Camper Special with a 390 (was a 360) and the "G" trans, and it's a C6.
Other than looking at a dealer brochure,it could be tough.
BTW, Ford Used the "G" to designate > an "Automatic Transmission"
Nothing about which one it is.
I have a brochure from the 1970,I', sure some things would be the same
just not all.
As far as C4 or C6 you just need to look at the bell housing. On a C4 the bell housing (front of trans.) is actually molded with the rest of the tranny. On a C6 the bell housing is bolted to the rest of it.

Uh, methinks you got it backwards. I have two C6s, and both have one piece cast aluminum transmission cases/bell housings. It is the C4 that has the separate bell.
